There are only three cups like it in the world.
About 800 years ago, potters at the Jian kilns in southern China fired thousands of simple tea bowls. A few came out of the fire changed. Their dark glaze had bloomed into spots of blue and silver that shimmer like stars in a night sky.
Only three of those bowls survive whole today. All three are in Japan, where they are National Treasures. Potters have tried for centuries to make another one on purpose. None has truly matched them.

The Japanese have a word for what happened inside that kiln: yōhen. It is the moment the maker steps back and the fire finishes the work.
